Scunthorpe’s first non-profit gymnastics academy has opened in Bottesford following a funding boost from UK Steel Enterprise (UKSE).

Founded in June 2016, Allegro Gymnastics Academy offers gymnastics training to individuals living in North Lincolnshire from pre-school children to adults. The Academy is also working with able and special needs individuals at both competitive and non-competitive levels.

Allison Hickling applied to the UKSE Kickstart Fund, an initiative launched earlier this year and was granted £1000 to assist with the establishment of her business.  This helped finance training and qualifications for two gymnastics coaches.

The company, based in South Park Industrial Estate, has already generated enough interest to employ five members of staff to deliver Academy gymnastics sessions.

The Kickstart initiative, a partnership between UK Steel Enterprise, North Lincolnshire Council and the Growth Hub, was established to help make it easier for entrepreneurs to start a new business in North Lincolnshire.  UKSE is also keen to support non-profit projects which contribute to the local community.

Keith Williams, UKSE Regional Manager said: “Allison has created a fantastic facility for the local community and her enthusiasm is infectious.  The Academy is already very popular so I know this facility will be well used.

“As well as providing competition grade equipment and qualified coaches, Allison also plans to give youngsters the opportunity to obtain coaching qualifications themselves.

“This is a great project which contributes to the local community in a variety of ways and we are delighted to have been able to contribute.”

Allison said: “I set up the business to promote health and wellbeing in the local community and the UK Steel Kickstart Fund has really helped make that a reality.”

“Since opening we have had a great response and because we are perfectly located next to residential areas, membership is increasing week on week.”
